Susan Milligan agrees with Phelan’s ideas of stricter gun control but for different reasons. Milligan believes that in order to save lives we must eliminate all guns. By eliminating all guns, Milligan does not think that it will keep dangerous weapons out of criminal hand, but that it will keep firearms our of the hands of the every day citizen (Milligan). By taking the weapons out of the hands of every day citizens, Milligan believes that many of the small shootings in this country will be eliminated. Stricter gun laws will prevent many of these small shootings because it will keep weapons out of many inexperienced hands, but we will never be able to keep all of the weapons out of criminals' hands (Milligan). There are many cases where the average citizen is able to get a gun without too much difficulty. This ease for getting guns leads to many unstable people possessing guns. Many mentally ill people are able to posses firearms because the laws make it extremely easy for almost anyone to buy a gun (Edwards). There are many examples of formally innocent, and possibly unstable people getting position of guns and then attacking and killing others. One example would be from a shooting in a Florida movie theater, where an armed citizen shot a man in front of him because he refused to stop texting (Milligan). Later reports say that the gunman felt threatened by the man in front of him, but if the gun had been removed from this situation there would have been a far lower chance of death. According to Milligan, the gunman is not a criminal because in the past, he had a spotless record and this was his first offence. In Mulligans eyes, this whole situation could have been avoided if there had been stricter gun laws preventing this man to obtain a firearm. A second episode that backs up Milligan’s theory is a shooting in a middle school. A twelve-year-old boy brought his parents’ gun to school and proceeded to shoot one of his classmates and a teacher (Milligan). Milligan believes that this incident is not the child’s fault, but it is the result of lax gun laws, and the large availability of guns in this country. Milligan argues for stronger gun laws, not to keep the guns out of criminal hands, but to keep guns away from the inexperienced shooters.
